DOLBY DEMONSTRATION

Four members enjoyed a splendid demonstration of home cinema and music at Bill Goldie’s last Friday evening. Bill has set up a lounge in his home with a 32” LCD Panasonic TV, four Tannoy speakers and sub-woofer, a large projection screen which has its own remote and descends effortlessly and quietly from the ceiling, digital projector, Skybox, Yamaha multi channel amplifier, Toshiba player, computer and switch box. All wiring is ‘in the wall’ and the presentation is rounded off by dimming lights as in all the best cinemas.

Bill demonstrated Dolby Digital and Dolby True HD 5.1 – and offered to buy a drink to anyone who could tell the difference. This could have proved a rash gesture because the three visitors were absolutely at one in concluding that Dolby True HD was the superior sound with greater clarity, realism and spaciousness whereas, Dolby Digital was more congested and ‘splashy’ – you know what I mean! We didn’t pursue the drink offer.

Picture quality was also impressive and being so large in a domestic scale room, rather overwhelming – how we missed those dinosaurs teeth, I’ll never know. Inevitably, I suppose, when we saw the picture quality on the 32” LCD screen, it was superior to the big screen with more intense colour and greater sharpness.

Having thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and feeling rather smug at the unanimous judgement on Dolby True HD 5.1 surround, we repaired to the Maharini in Troon for an excellent curry.

Our grateful thanks to Bill.

Robert
