Laser Audio Visit

29th Sept 2000

Our visit to Laser Audio was indeed a memorable one, and a very packed evening!  Firstly we were met by our host Neil Menzies Neil Menzieswho welcomed eight of us with a hot coffee (very nice). Then we were ushered in two groups to hear a demonstration of Mission Audio's new flat speakers.

Bill Cochrane Bill Cochranegave an in depth talk about the construction of Mission Audio's new flat speaker system, the fs2™ which was developed by NXT Technology.  (Hear a clip of the lecture here in REALAUDIO . Download the player if you don't have it)

Before the actual audio visual demonstration, he stripped down one of the speakers to show the component parts, and how easy it was to add extraGet reaplayer membranes to produce even better sound dispersion.  The theory of how these speakers work was debated  and discussed in depth, but if you wish to knoAn fs2 speaker stripped downw more, I recommend more reading here at the NXT website, also the Mission Speakers website here.

We were given an Audio/Visual demonstration of the speakers after the lecture, and I must say that for Audio visual use, they were impressive indeed, although lacking any bass (this was made up for with a sub bass unit!).  The units were physically unobtrusive and functioned well.

Later Neil led us into a different  listening room for another demo. This time it was to hear a range of CDs made in a rather unusual old fashioned way. They were all recorded with ONE microphone, with each artist physically moving near the axis of the mic to record his or her piece.  This eliminates the need for elaborate audio processing which many say "distorts" the final product.Ruark Speakers

The producer of these CD's, Peter Heywood, gave a very interesting chat about how and why these speciality CDPeter Heywoods were made, and gave us some extremely good examples played on Ruark speakers which showed up any deficiencies in the recordings. (Well! almost!). The recordings do sound a LOT better when heard on BBC reference monitor speakers in an acoustically controlled environment, as Peter kindly gave me one of his CDs forAcute Listeners testing. There was a CD that was played on the evening which was of a folk/country group recorded at the Dean Castle, and I must say, that knowing how it was done - using DI straight from the PA system in certain cases, it sounded extremely good. The West of Scotland Hi-Fi Club is hoping to get involved in perhaps making one of these CDs in the future as a one off, and our Chairman, Gordon will be working out something.

Gordon then gave us all an information sheet titled "Where are they now?" This was a humorous insight to past British Hi-Fi companies. I hope to include this on a Web page soon.

The evening finished off via the "Wheatsheaf"  pub followed by  a curry in the "Jewel in the Crown" restaurant at the top of Kilmarnock. (Sorry, no pictures Gordon Macdonald )   A really GREAT evening and one of the best I can remember for a long time.
